About the advancing face - spatial effects in tunnel engineeringAbstract:The paper illustrates the importance of spatial effects in tunnelling by addressing a number of practical design and analysis issues. It also provides an overview of recent research at ETH Zurich dealing with the evolution of the stresses and deformations around the advancing face. At the same time, it shows that taking due account of spatial effects leads to results which may be qualitatively different to those obtained through plane strain analyses.
